Those rectangular, Japanese tiles are just ugly & make your place look cheap, no matter what. I haven't seen one attractive photo yet on pinterest that features them. They waste too much grout & are a pain in the ass to keep clean. Lighter colors are the way to go. Use offwhites to add a touch of color that works well with the direction your place faces. Dark colors look terrible because you have to deal with the glaring light coming in that's migraine-inducing when everything else is dark. (Darks work well in regions that don't get a lot of strong sunlight throughout the year.)

I have a huge square window above my kitchen sink. Mini-blinds worked ok, but got dirty easy. Designers HATE café curtains today. I only needed privacy on the bottom 1/3 of the window, but liked nothing on the window. I used a thin cotton sheet to make a café curtain (just a white and blue 1/2" stripe), so closed it lets a lot of light in, but can't see through it. The 2" wall above the window is just really a ruffle type valance. I arched this "valance" so on the sides it is longer than the middle, this makes the window look longer than it is wide. This has a casual look, not modern. I can see the clouds and the neighbors can not see the junk in the sink. I kept the mini-blinds bottom slats closed, but this lets in so much more light even closed, and much easier to clean. Despite what they say, café curtains look fine in a kitchen or eating area, but never a living room. BTW, I took the doors off under the sink and put a curtain of that fabric there, so I have it floor to ceiling. This doesn't look country just casual/classic. Hope this helps somebody.

OK Reynard. I get that first point. In a small space, sticking to One color looks less cluttered because all the different elements don't compete with each other, the sameness looks less cluttered. Clutter is enclosing. This is like if I open food pantry and all the things in there are screaming for attention individually, it will look chaotic. If everything in there were all one color, it wouldn't look so junky, it would look like less stuff is in there. Got it, lesson learned. Instead of throwing out concepts or rules, you explain WHY and the rationale of the concept. Thanks again.

An addition to my home has a lower ceiling than in the original house. I was advised to paint the ceiling and walls the same colour. I painted the built in cabinetry the same colour, too. It has made a small and pokey space feel bigger. Fewer items on display helps, too!

When I changed my bathroom floor, I chose what I liked for the space. As it turned out, it was a different material than the other floors that were visible from the bathroom but it was the same colour. I was amazed how much more spacious that part of my home felt when doors were left open. It is now "on my radar" for when I am ready to change the kitchen floor.

We have the Ekedalen dinning table in the dark brown, we have had it for almost 5 years. We moved countries and needed something that was inexpensive and readily available. It's not a statement piece but I am not too precious about as we have a kid, it's easy to clean and practicality own over esthetics 😂. I would love to upgrade it, but I will wait a few more years before investing in something nice 👍🙂

The tip about putting similar items on a tray makes such a big difference. I have one in my kitchen next to the stove for olive oil, salt and pepper etc. One in my bathroom for perfumes and one on the bathroom vanity for my husband's shaving gear. It really helps it to look more organised and intentional and more high end as well. And definitely put things away in their designated place, this is a sticky point in our home, my husband and daughter are totally useless at this, i no longer put things away for them, i call them and get them to put items where they belong.

There are always random things that I use irregularly, but don't know how to store. Like I bought greeting card pack from my niece for school fundraiser. Where would I store that and be able to find it later? Like photo printer and stock paper. I use about once a month but I wouldn't have the first clue how to store it but keep it available to use. This is the type of clutter that gets me in trouble. Where do I store batteries without storing them somewhere impossible to reach or find later?

Although one rarely sees them, build in a seat in the shower. That makes it much easier to wash one's feet or for women to shave their legs. It does not add a lot of cost.

I agree with point 8. It took me a ling time to figure out how much detail i needed when organising my things. I watched clutter bug and found out i am a lady bug. I still need large basket/containers to organise my stuff , but it need them in broad categories. Keeping tiny containers is not my organising style.

Funny how millennials are all about wicker chairs. My grandmothers since the 70s had wicker chairs. When they would break, a blind man would repair them. I did a built in bench on our last house and it’s just too difficult to make a bench comfortable. I wouldn’t do a bench again. REALLY love the artwork. Where did you get your black and white marble tray in your other video?

Great video, you are really able to articulate the problem and solution here… I am a man of order. Not anal nerd order, like having individual drawers for every size of screw. But order with general categories of bins, hooks and storage. My wife on the other hand, Well that’s another story.

When getting cabinets, spend the extra money and get drawers. Items in the back of a swing door cabinet is good as gone.

Those black exteriors attract a vast amount of heat from the sun. Way more than any other color.

you are exactly right about vessel sinks. I did not want to have an undermounted sink in my kitchen, but I really like being able to push the water into the sink without going over a hump. It is interesting that toilet function doesn't not always make sense. In other words just looking at a toilet will not always reveal the best fuction. I would never use a colored fixture. For example we bought a house with lavender toilet, sinks, and shower/tub. Things immediately starte to fall apsrt when it came time to replace the toilet seat. How often do you see a lavender toilet seat?

Since I have always disliked grey, I am very ready for that trend to go. On the other hand I have a huge field stone granity fireplace which it gray. But my floors are real wood. I love my white, granite/marble counter top. I has a lot of veining but the viens are multi-collored and not reall bold. I have not understood using large swaths of granite, anywhere. It seem so expensive and not attractive.
